Visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Townsville

THERE IS SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO AT THE MUSEUM OF TROPICAL QUEENSLAND

We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly museum with a changing range of activities and exhibitions for all ages. We enjoy bringing fresh and engaging content to Townsville that locals might not otherwise get a chance to see.

Every Thursday during school terms, we run a junior ‘discover more’ activity called Beau’s Buddies specially designed for children under six. Starting at 9.45am, a new museum object is uncovered and kids learn about it, hear a related story and join in a craft activity. This is a free activity and there’s no need to book.

On most Tuesday mornings our team of taxidermists spend time in the preparation room beside the café in the Great Gallery. Between 10am and 1pm, these volunteers are happy to come out, talk to visitors about the work they do and answer questions about their taxidermy work and bird identification.

One of our most popular areas for kids is the Enchanted Rainforest, which focuses on one of North Queensland’s most iconic ecosystems. This exhibition on Level 2 transports visitors into the light and shade of Tropical Queensland’s rainforest environment. Built around an awe-inspiring recreation of a quandong tree and featuring a slide and rope bridge, children can learn about rainforest plants and animals in a safe and fun environment.

Your Shipwreck Adventure is an immersive space next to our popular Pandora Gallery where kids can explore the marine life and history of a shipwreck. Based on a mysterious underwater environment featuring an underwater soundscape and theatrical lighting, this Great Barrier Reef shipwreck uses games and activities to teach children about the importance of preserving historic shipwrecks and coral reefs.

Do you have what it takes to be a pirate? Find out with Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition

Get hands-on with pirate history at this Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition based on the bestselling Horrible Histories® series and developed in association with Scholastic UK.

Take command of a pirate ship, design and project your own pirate flag, try out different weapons from cutlasses to cannons, find your fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and splat rats in the quayside tavern.

Along the way, discover why the pirate women were just as wicked as the men and learn to talk the patter of a pirate. Learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is the first venue in Queensland and only the third in Australia to host this travelling exhibition.

Horrible Histories – Pirates: The Exhibition is on from 16 September 2017 – 4 February 2018
